COMMON QUESTIONS FROM PARENTS
Answers to the most common questions families ask before getting started.
What can counseling help with?
Counseling supports children and teens with challenges such as anxiety, low mood, behavior concerns, emotional regulation, attention difficulties, social skills, motivation, and coping with stress or life changes.
How do I know if my child needs counseling?
If your child often feels overwhelmed, has trouble expressing emotions, struggles at school, or seems disconnected or irritable, counseling can help them develop healthy coping tools and restore balance.
What happens during a counseling session?
Each session is personalized to your child’s needs and comfort level. Activities may include conversation, play, art, journaling, or skill-building exercises that help children express themselves and learn strategies for managing emotions.
How long are sessions and how often do they take place?
Sessions typically last 45–50 minutes. Most children start with weekly sessions to build consistency, and frequency can adjust as progress continues.
Will parents be involved in the process?
Absolutely. We value collaboration with families. Parents receive regular updates and guidance on how to reinforce strategies at home, while respecting the child’s privacy and therapeutic space.
How long does my child need counseling?
The length of counseling depends on each child’s goals and progress. Some children benefit from short-term focused support, while others may continue longer for ongoing growth and skill-building.
Do you offer virtual or in-person sessions?
Yes. We offer both in-person sessions at our Bakersfield office and secure telehealth sessions for families who prefer online support.
What is the difference between counseling and therapy?
Counseling often focuses on specific challenges (like emotional regulation or behavior), while therapy may explore deeper emotional patterns. Our approach blends both—meeting each child where they are and guiding them toward meaningful change
How do I prepare my child for their first session?
Keep it positive and simple! Let them know they’ll be meeting someone who helps kids understand feelings, solve problems, and learn ways to feel better at home and school.
Is what my child says confidential?
Yes. Everything your child shares is confidential unless there are safety concerns. We explain confidentiality clearly so both you and your child understand the boundaries of privacy and trust.
What qualifications does the psychologist have?
Our counseling services are provided by licensed educational psychologist with extensive experience supporting children and adolescents in both school and private settings.
How do I get started?
Simply schedule a complimentary consultation call with our Client Care & Scheduling Coordinator. We’ll discuss your child’s needs, answer questions, and help you determine if our counseling services are the right fit.
Do you work with schools or teachers?
Yes. With parent consent, we can collaborate with your child’s school team to ensure consistency and support across settings, especially for behavior or emotional goals.
What ages do you work with?
We work with children, teens, and young adults, generally from ages 4 through 18, adapting strategies to each developmental stage.
What kinds of strategies do you use in counseling?
Our sessions integrate evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), solution-focused strategies, mindfulness, and social–emotional learning tools, all tailored to your child’s age and needs.
How is progress measured?
Progress is reviewed collaboratively through therapist observations, parent feedback, and child self-reflection. We set clear goals together and celebrate growth along the way.
Can counseling help with school motivation or behavior?
Yes! Many students struggle with focus, organization, or frustration tolerance. Counseling helps identify underlying challenges and teaches practical skills for classroom and social success.
What if my child doesn’t want to attend counseling?
It’s normal for some children to feel unsure at first. We create a welcoming, non-judgmental space that builds trust at their pace—helping them feel comfortable opening up over time
How are parents updated about progress?
Parents receive periodic check-ins and can request brief updates. We also share take-home strategies when appropriate to help you reinforce skills outside of sessions.
Do you accept insurance or provide superbills?
We are an out-of-network provider, but we offer superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. We’re happy to walk you through this process.
