The Bridge Approach to Dyslexia Testing & Support

When a child works hard but still struggles with reading, writing, or math, it’s not just about effort. It’s about understanding how their brain learns.

At Bridge Educational Psychology Services in Bakersfield and Kern County, we focus on psychoeducational evaluations. We help identify the reasons for learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. These evaluations help build a full learning profile that includes your child’s strengths, challenges, and needs. We also provide early intervention strategies to help your child succeed.

Dyslexia: Reading & Language Processing

Dyslexia affects how the brain processes written language. Children with dyslexia may struggle with reading fluency, sounding out words, spelling or understanding what they read.

These challenges are not related to intelligence many students with dyslexia have strong reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Common signs of dyslexia may include:

  • Slow or effortful reading

  • Difficulty decoding unfamiliar words

  • Avoidance or anxiety around reading

  • Challenges with reading comprehension

Early dyslexia testing helps identify these patterns and guides targeted intervention. The sooner dyslexia is identified, the sooner supports can be put in place to help students build confidence and succeed academically.

Dysgraphia: Writing

Dysgraphia affects handwriting, spelling, and expressing ideas on paper. Although students may know exactly what they want to say, they can have difficulty writing their ideas clearly.

This can impact their reading and writing skills especially in writing more complex ideas.

Dysgraphia: Math

Dyscalculia affects number sense, sequencing, and calculations. Students may struggle with symbols, find word problems difficult, or have trouble memorizing math facts. If early intervention does not address these struggles, fear of math can develop.
